Historic Kankakee offers several attractions for visitors as well as County natives. The Kankakee County Museum, which celebrated its Centennial in 2006, houses numerous collection of Civil War artifacts, original artwork by George Grey Barnard (1863-1938), and its permanent galleries which include exhibits entitled "The Story of Kankakee County", "The Three Governor’s Gallery" and "The Sculpture of George Grey Barnard". Also within Museum limits is the one-room Taylor school house, and the home of Dr A.L. Small, whose son, Len Small is a former Governor of Illinois. Other must-see sites in Kankakee County include two incredible and neighboring Frank Lloyd Wright homes (pictured), the All-Veterans Memorial which contains a bronze statue honoring Kankakee-native Colonel James Kasler (the only person in history to be awarded three Air Force Crosses, and the author of “Tempered Steel”), the George R. Letourneau Home Museum, and the 1931 Paramount Theater, just to name a few. Search our Directory for Historical Sites Photo courtesy of Journal Communications Inc.
